The cheapest VPS you can run in an Australian data center is UpCloud's Starter 1 GB at $3.36 a month (€3.00), billed by the hour. For more memory, Bluehost's VPS NVMe 2 has 2 GB for $4.99, and OVHcloud's VPS-1 has 4 GB of RAM and 2 vCPUs for $5.03 (€4.49).
We checked these prices on 11 October 2026 at the shortest billing term each provider sells. All prices are in US dollars; euro prices are converted at about $1.12 per euro. At the day's rate, US$5.00 is roughly A$7.17.
How we picked these plans
Of the 20 providers we track, 12 list Australia as a location for a VPS or cloud server: UpCloud, DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, AWS Lightsail, OVHcloud, Scaleway, Bluehost, Contabo, hosting.com, Cloudways and SiteGround. We ranked unmanaged Linux plans by what one month costs.
Seven providers don't appear because they have no Australian location in our data: Hetzner, Hostinger, IONOS, netcup, InterServer, DreamHost and Namecheap. That removes several of the cheapest European hosts, which is why Australian prices start a little higher than German ones.

Cheapest overall: UpCloud Starter 1 GB
UpCloud's Starter plan has 1 vCPU, 1 GB of RAM and 10 GB of SSD for €3.00 a month. Traffic is unmetered in our data, and the price is the same in Australia as in UpCloud's European locations. The disk is the limit: 10 GB suits a small service, not a site with many uploads. The 2 GB Starter plan, with 20 GB of disk, is $6.72 (€6.00).
Most RAM for the money: OVHcloud VPS-1
OVHcloud's VPS-1 is the only plan in the table with 4 GB of RAM, and it costs about the same as the 1 GB plans around it: €4.49 a month, or €3.81 a month (about $4.27) on a 12-month term. The price is the same at renewal.
The catch is specific to OVHcloud's Asia-Pacific locations, Australia included: VPS plans there have a monthly traffic quota (500 GB on VPS-1, 1 TB on VPS-2), and bandwidth is limited to 10 Mbps after that. In Europe and Canada the same plans are unmetered.
The big clouds charge US prices
Vultr, Linode and Lightsail start at $5.00 a month in Australia, and DigitalOcean's 1 GB Droplet is $6.00. These are the same prices they charge in the United States, so you are not paying a regional premium for the server itself.
The differences are in what $5 buys. Vultr and Linode give 1 GB of RAM and 25 GB of SSD with 1 TB of transfer. Lightsail's $5 plan has 2 vCPUs but half the RAM, and its 1 GB plan is $7.00. At 2 GB, Vultr is $10.00 and DigitalOcean, Linode and Lightsail are $12.00.
Also worth a look
- Bluehost VPS NVMe 2: 2 GB of RAM and 50 GB of NVMe for $4.99 a month, renewing at $5.99. On a 12-month term it was $3.99 when we checked. The cheapest 2 GB server in Australia if you don't need hourly billing.
- hosting.com Self Managed Linux 4GB: 2 vCPUs, 4 GB and 80 GB for $10.99 the first month, then $19.00. The long-term price is better: $6.49 a month on a 36-month term, still renewing at $19.00.
- OVHcloud VPS-2: 4 vCPUs, 8 GB and 75 GB of NVMe for $9.51 (€8.49), with the 1 TB traffic quota.
Plans we left out
- Contabo offers its Cloud VPS range in Australia (Cloud VPS 4: 4 vCPUs, 8 GB, €5.50 a month). Contabo adds a monthly location fee outside its home region at checkout. That fee isn't in our price data, so we couldn't rank it honestly; check the total on Contabo's order page.
- Managed servers. Cloudways starts at $11.00 a month on DigitalOcean, and SiteGround's managed cloud starts at $100.00. Both include server management you may not need.
- Windows plans.
Which city?
Our data records the country, not the city. Most providers that list Australia mean Sydney, and a few also offer Melbourne. If your visitors are in Perth, Brisbane or New Zealand, check the provider's region list and test the latency yourself; hourly billing makes that cheap to do.
FAQ
What is the cheapest VPS in Australia with 2 GB of RAM?
Bluehost VPS NVMe 2 at $4.99 a month. The cheapest with hourly billing is OVHcloud's Public Cloud d2-2 at $6.40 (€5.71), followed by UpCloud's Starter 2 GB at $6.72.
Is hosting more expensive in Australia?
Not at the big cloud providers: Vultr, Linode, Lightsail, DigitalOcean and UpCloud charge the same as elsewhere. Australia looks pricier mainly because the cheapest European hosts, such as Hetzner and netcup, don't have a location there.
Do I need a server in Australia at all?
If most of your visitors are in Australia or New Zealand, a local server cuts the delay on every request compared with one in the US or Europe. If your audience is global, the location matters less than the price.
The bottom line
UpCloud's Starter 1 GB is the cheapest Australian VPS at $3.36 a month. Bluehost VPS NVMe 2 is the cheapest with 2 GB ($4.99), and OVHcloud VPS-1 gives you 4 GB for $5.03 if its 500 GB traffic quota is enough. For hourly billing with no surprises, Vultr and Linode at $5.00 are the safe middle.
